One of the great advantages of having quartz countertops is the ease of care. Still, there are some things you need to know to keep your counters looking amazing.

For everyday cleaning, you’ll want to have a soft rag or paper towel handy. A mild detergent should do what you need. Just be sure that you don’t have a cleaner with bleach in it. Also, make sure that your cleaner is non-abrasive. The ideal cleaner is one that provides a streak free clean and has a neutral PH.

If you spill something, make sure that you wipe it up as soon as possible. While quartz will resist fruit juice, coffee or tea for a small amount of time, you want to make sure that it doesn’t stain your counters.

If you do end up with a stain or have a dried or heavy stain, use a surface cleaner or glass cleaner with a non-abrasive sponge. The best kind would be a sponge that you wouldn’t mind using on a non-stick pan.

Greases can be cleaned using a degreasing cleaner. However, be sure to clean the counters off immediately after you use it. Permanent marker or ink will come off with an oil based cleaner, like Goo Gone. As mentioned before, clean off the impacted area once you’ve removed the stain.

A dried stain on the counter surface like paint, grease or gum takes a different approach. Get a plastic putty knife to remove it. A metal one could scratch the surface and you want to avoid that.

It’s not so much about what to do, but what to avoid when caring for your quartz. On that note, avoid these:

  • Cutting things directly on the counter with knives is out. Have a good cutting board around for this task.
  • No hot pans directly on the counter surface. A hot pad will help with pans, slow cookers and electric skillets.
  • Cleaners like bleach, turpentine, nail polish remover, oven cleaners, dishwasher rinse agents and drain cleaners should be avoided. If any of these happen to spill accidently, clean your counters immediately with a mild detergent, rinsing after.
  • Wax and polish don’t mix well with quartz, so avoid using these.

Simple maintenance and care will help your quartz counters last a long time and keep your kitchen looking great
